Rebecca Lowry Brings Something New to
Omaha's Music Scene; The Ukulele.

By: Audrey Kay

When I asked Rebecca to meet up with me for a cup of coffee to talk about her music, it wasn't like most other interviews I have with musicians. It felt like I knew her for years. Actually, this is because I HAVE known her for years. It all goes back to Jr. High church summer camp and youth groups, and she was one of the leaders. It was the first time since then that we met, so we had A LOT of catching up. It was awesome to be able to get to know her on a different wavelength. I've seen her at different shows in the Omaha metro, Filter Kings and such, but didn't realize she was a musician herself until I found her online, and I was so impressed! I interview a lot of drummers, guitar and bass players, and the occasional pianist, but had yet to meet a ukulele player, so this was definitely something I wanted to know about. Over my soy vanilla latte, she spilled all about her musical influences, how she got started, and her love for swing dance!

As most people probably would ask, the first thing that came to mind was "What possessed you to think of the ukulele?" After some laughter, she retorts back, "I think it fits my personality. I don't feel like I'm being 'different' by playing it, I just picked up something I finally know how to play." Though ukulele playing is unique, it's not uncommon. In fact, the internet is where Rebecca got a lot of her inspiration to pick up the little guitar-esque instrument. "I'm kinda a nerd, so I spend a lot of time on YouTube", she says, "musicians like Julia Nunes and Danielle Ate The Sandwich inspired me to play." And although you would have thought she'd been playing for years, she really hasn't been playing all that long. "I've been writing my own stuff since February of last year," she goes on to say, "I've was in show choir in school. I got kind of thrown into it. At Barley Street [tavern] you can't do covers there, so I had no choice, I had to just do it. Luckily, everyone was really nice and encouraging there. I felt so out of my league and now it's like one big family".

Though Rebecca has stayed true to her Omaha roots and has played a lot of local venues, particularly in the Benson area, things are looking up as far as recording goes. She has currently recorded eight songs with Florida-based band, Spider+Octopus, and is now waiting to get the track back to see what happens with her music from there. Though the future of her music excites her, don't expect her to get a big head about it anytime soon. "I've just been taking it day by day," she says, "I'm nearly 30 [years old] and just starting out. I feel like I started this at an age that I can just enjoy everything that comes along. I mean, I made the posters for my show, and had the BEST time doing it. I feel like the journey is the best part about it all."

Her beautiful voice and calming strums on the ukulele are amazing to listen to after a stressful day at work. I keep thinking that if only her and Norah Jones could collaborate, they would make some really powerful music together. Her sound is just happy, soothing, and all-around some light-hearted, feel good music. Check her MySpace out at http://www.myspace.com/aygamg and give her a listen. She will be playing at Barley Street Tavern on Saturday, January 23rd alongside Kyle Harvey and Kick Narl at 10 pm. Even if you're not a lovey-dovey type, go have a beer and check it out; she's sure to impress you with her mean ukulele skills! :)

Till next time,

Audreyxxx
